Functions of Bones in the Human Body
There are three main functions of bones in the human body.
- Protection- The skeleton provides protection for the body's internal organs. The skeleton keeps the internal organs from being injured. For example, the rib cage protects the heart and lungs, and the vertebrae protects the spinal cord.
- Locomotion- The skeletal muscles are connected to bones, so when the muscle contracts, the bones move.**If you are not sure about the different types of muscles and their functions, you should go back and review lesson 2 now.
- Support- The skeleton is the framework of the body. It provides support for most of the softer tissues and allows for the attachment of muscles.
